My Own Baby Food? Probably Part 1

In keeping with the theme of losing my mind and going back to "the olden days" for several areas of my life (except my ozone killing hairspray) I am now considering making my own baby food.

You know, since I have so much free time.

I made some baby food when Makiah was a baby, but I wasn't really committed to it, and eventually Gerber won out. That's when their Organic baby food was called Tender Harvest. I liked that name and the packaging was pleasing to look at (not that Makiah cared) and the variety of food was amazing. They had very interesting combos on the stage 2 food, but alas, I am getting off course here.

Back to the topic.

I am currently doing research online concerning this, but I am interested in what you, my readers (all four of you) have to say about this. What is your opinion, have you made your own baby food, did you find it to be a hassle or just part of the routine, was it super time consuming??? So many questions people, so many questions!!

Trying to save some $$$ and feed my baby the best I can.

Please comment back about your experiences.

I'm kind of like you: I've had periods where I've made my own food, then I get busy and go back to the Organic pre-made stuff. (It's nice that they're finally making a little more variety now. There are more choices now than a few years ago, that's for sure!) I bought the book Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld last year & have used it to make various purees & recipes. I've fed them to Avery as well as snuck them into the boys' food w/o them knowing. (There's a chocolate chip cookie with garbanzo beans in it that they love!)
I guess if you make a big batch and freeze it it can be hassle free. I was just never that organized, I guess. =)

The homemade stuff tastes and smells waaaaaayyyyy better than the jar stuff, especially the peas. Just take the frozen or fresh fruits and veggies and boil them until they're soft enough to put through a little food processor. Put the food in, pour in a little of the "juice" from boiling, and blend it. My daughter loved having some texture to her food and you can combine whatever foods you want. Scoop it into ice cube trays and freeze. Thaw and serve a cube or two at a time or toss them in a little portable container to take with you. It's really very easy.

I haven't made any yet (except for mashing up real bananas - but does that really count?) but I plan to try it soon.
