That's right dear friends I am having a cloth diapering situation in the Lovelock home today.
So I am over here today trying to get some help so that I don't pull all my hair out. That would not be pretty. Trust me.
I do have this to say: THIS IS THE FIRST MORNING IN 9 DAYS THAT NO ONE HAS A FEVER!!!!! Can you tell that I am excited about that??? Maybe just maybe we are coming out of the fog of sickness that has been hovering for way too long? Is it too soon to hope? I hope not.
Anyway, come on over and help this mama out.

Soak, Wash, Rinse, Spin. . . Repeat, Dry, Stuff. . . Repeat. . . Repeat
Washing cloth diapers was the furthest thing from my mind a year and a half ago. But thanks to a friends enthusiasm about using cloth, I tried and I am now the proud owner of a large stash of cloth diapers or nappies as they are frequently called around here. I am an addict. I love using cloth, but I have to say that finding the perfect wash routine has been an interesting journey. I still don't know that it's perfect and I am sure between now and the end of our cloth diapering journey this routine will be tweaked time and time again.
I have to say that when I started I totally needed a cloth diapering for dummies book because I was absolutely clueless! Now, I probably still need the book, but I like to think I know a little more today. Our current stash consists of, well, all pockets except one fitted and one cover. You can see where our heart is in nappies. Though I just recently won this fitted we are using and I have to say, IT'S AWESOME. But that's a post that's already been.
The Load
Daniel is carrying a full load. Off to the changing table we go. Hose him down, nice clean nappy, nice clean baby. I peer into the wet bag and I am reminded that today, yes today, would be wash day. I take the inserts out when they come off the baby. I don't like the idea of going through 15-20 uggie nappies to pull them out later. Guess I am strange like that. I also shake of any solids right then, flush them buh-bye. I try to wash in the morning after I change the over night diaper. This puts drying in the afternoon when the sun is nice and bright on my patio. Oh, but drying is in a different section.
The Water and The Soap~~Two Things You Shouldn't Leave Out
Wash #1
Because Hubs is a little put off (and I have to admit so am I) with soaking the poo type diapers in a tub of water, I dump the contents of my wet bag into the washing machine, cloth wipes included, the whole shebang, you might say. I set it on cold water on the longest, slowest (Gentle) cycle I have, this acts as my soaking time and first wash. I set it on the largest water setting for this wash. Throw in dose of Tiny Bubbles. I use the recommended amount for cloth diapers, which is usually a fourth of the recommended amount on the box.
Its Getting Hot In Here~~Wash #2
Now that the pee and poo have been rung out of your diapers and swished out to sea, you need to get those diapers clean, clean! A hot, heavy cycle is next for us. I change the water setting down to large (no need to use more water than necessary) and my temperature to the HOT/COLD setting. I throw in a little detergent, a little less than the first time.
To Rinse or To Wash. . . This is the Question
Wash, uh rinse, uh let's just say Step #3
Here's where things get interesting, kinda. This is the point of the washing that I have to make a decision. Because Daniel's bum is a little sensitive I have to really watch the soap build up rash thing, so I have to decide if I want the diapers to run through another complete HOT/COLD cycle, or if I can just set it on rinse (I only have a cold option for rinse, hmpf, pout) and hope that the diapers are soap free. How do you make this decision, you ask??? I keep a lookout at his bum situation. If his bum is looking kinda red, then I decide that they need an actual wash, with NO soap, in essence a really good rinsing in HOT water. So I start a light wash cycle on HOT/COLD. If his bum is looking ok, I decide to do that second HOT wash next time. Either way, the nappies get a good rinse.

Drying Time
I LOVE! sun drying my nappies (I also enjoy calling them nappies and no I am not from Europe). I would say line dry, but since I live in apartment and have no where for a "line" I use a drying rack on my patio. It works great! I sun dry the pockets and the cover every time, unless rain prevents it. The inserts, doublers and the fitted diaper only get sunned every other wash, I like to fluff them up in the dryer. I usually dry on normal heat for about 50 minutes and if they need more drying I add them to the rack.

I am done with the wash, now onto the stuffins' of the matter. I always try and usually do, stuff the pockets right away. I also create two or three, what we call, "night time nappies" right then. Nighttime nappy=bumGenius with insert and a doubler laid on the inside. I get everything stuffed and put into their appropriate basket (yes they have specific baskets, no snickering) and I am ready to go. The cloth wipes are folded and put away too. During the wash routine, our second wet bag is called in for duty.

Cloth Diaper Ramblins'
As you all know, very well, I am a cloth diapering addict! It has proven to be one of the best financial decisions we've made. I am so glad that I was tempted enough to try it out and really glad that it didn't gross me out!! I just wanted to post an update of our cloth world!!
I am absolutely loving the one size bumwear diapers! I recently added two of them to our stash and I am nothing but pleased and I am thinking that Daniel is too. They have a great fit and I didn't realize how much I missed the snapping type closure system versus the velcro. I am still lovin' our bumGenius, but the bumwear is definitely a close second. Besides having some oh so cute patterns, there is another feature that I love about this nappy; the fleece lining is in solid colors therefore reducing the staining factor. I have used a Happy Heiny medium/large insert and a bumGenius insert in the pocket and both work very well with this diaper. We have had no leaks! No pushing on baby's tummy either, because the top of the diaper actually rolls out rather than into the belly.
We are also loving our Rumparooz diapers! I don't use them at night, I am too chicken too try (why fix what ain't broken and our BG's more than do the job), but I use them during the day all the time. When I put his rumparooz on they always seem a little small, but once they are on, they are fine. They work great, so far leakage free. The inner leg gussets make them poo holding champs.
I have also tried out another diaper that we have truly fallen in love with. Monkey Snuggles is on Etsy and she makes great diapers!! I have two of the size large diapers with snaps. They will fit Daniel for a long time and the prints are so cute!! Very good quality and they come with a trim bamboo fleece insert. I added a bumGenius doubler inside the pocket with the insert for even longer wearing! Love this diaper, I will be adding more to my stash!
After all is said and done, I still truly love the BG's. They are ALWAYS and ONLY our night time dipe! Never a leak, ever!
I finally made wipe solution. I was hesitant because Daniel's bum seems to be on the sensitive side and I didn't want to break him out. So I have just been using water on the wipes and that was doing the job. Then I got educated on why some oil needs to be in there. Imagine that, a purpose for the oil. It makes messes come off a little easier and softens the skin. So I read this article , which I only read because Mama Kenz so kindly provided the link, and came up with a solution that is working well for us. First, I considered the soap we would use. I absolutely love Method Squeaky Green Baby Wash. It smells divine and my skin sensitive boys can use it with no problems. People, this is a miracle. So I figured that if Daniel can get his whole body washed in it, then our wipe solution can be made with the same stuff. Soap component solved. Now onto the oil. I didn't want to use baby oil because, well, that just didn't seem right and I didn't want to cover up the wonderful smell of the soap. So I opted for grapeseed oil. A lot of the recipes used grapeseed oil and so I went for it. So here's what I did:
Easy Peasey YUM YUM Solution
2 Tablespoons of Method Squeaky Green Baby Wash
2 Tablespoons of Grapeseed Oil
1 1/2 cups of water
Amy Nogar, the author of that awesome article linked above, suggests that you "start with the oil and end with the water". Sense I am a smart mama, I followed directions. Her reasoning was that the "oil will coat your measuring tools so the soap slips right off", and she was right. Which makes me right for following directions, right? Right. Novices should always follow directions. The recipe above is called Easy Peasy and she called it that for a reason--because it is! I made a bottle of it in less than 7 minutes. I added the YUM YUM to the name because it smells so yummy!! The Easy Peasy solution is working well for us, but I have to admit that I am going to try out a few of the other solutions as well.
If you haven't read enough about the Lovelocks, I also posted over here today. I know, it's a two post day! Don't pass out okay?!?

Double the Fun
That's right two meme's for your viewing pleasure. I am up to my ears in boxes and packing, but I thought I'd take a little break and blog a little. You know, since I have nothing I should be doing! Ha! If you only knew. . . .
Two Meme's from Mama Kenz Studio, the birth story of her new little guy is up too!!

What were you most looking forward to doing postpartum that you couldn't do while pregnant, and did it live up to your expectations?
1. I wanted a HUGE Dr. Pepper. Not that I should drink it, but it sounded so good.
2. I wanted to sleep in on my stomach and on my back!
3. I wanted to be able to see my feet without having to sit down and hold them up.
4. I wanted to wear my cute shoes again versus my clogs because my feet were too huge for my cute shoes. (Not that I could see my feet, but everyone else could.)
5. I wanted to be able to sing in church again without needing to stop every three words to catch my breath! ~~Smile~~
Each one was satisfying for sure. Though postpartum I drank enough water to float a battleship, that little can of DP was really good. And the first day I got to stand up (c-section), I remember looking down and I said out loud "My feet are normal again and I can see them". The nurse chuckled at that one.

1. Which diaper did you or do you plan to use as the first one for your new babe, and why?
2. What are your tips for cloth diapering a newborn?
Well, I started cloth diapering when Daniel was four weeks old and I haven't looked back. I started with prefolds and covers because that was all I really knew about. I ordered a "try-it" kit and I used those prefolds and covers until he grew out of them and needed to go the next size. I think if I were to have another little one I would use some fitted diapers until he/she got a little bigger and then go with a one size pocket for the duration.
My tips:
~~My problem was not having enough dipes and I had to wash laundry a lot and keep 'sposies on hand. So make sure your stash is big enough.
~~Have everything organized with instructions near the changing area so that whenever a helper is changing your little one (hopefully while you are resting) they know where everything is and how everything works. (Whenever anyone besides me would change him, they would use a 'sposie because they weren't sure how or what to do)

All About Cloth Wipes Today
It's Chic Cheeks today and today it's all about wipes and wipe solution!
I am no help when it comes to wipe solution because though I have been using cloth wipes, which we love, I have just been using water. Though I have a recipe in the works because of this article (also linked up in Mama Kenz post). I'll let you know what we come up with for Daniel's bum! I know you are hanging on the edge of your seat! ~Smile~
I have tried four of the brand name wipes: Fuzzi Bunz, bumGenius, Thirsties and Happy Heiny's. I like them all, they all work fine, but I have to say my favorites are the Thirsties and the Fuzzi Bunz brands. Happy Heiny's work great for a tough job, but they are a little rough. The bumGenius are thin and great for small messes or just a wet diaper. Today I ordered new wipes from a couple of WAHM's. I ordered from Small Wonders and Creative Mama's and I can't wait to try out these cutie patootie wipes!
Now I am off to the natural food store for the grapeseed oil for the wipe solution!!

Cloth Diaper Storing-A Meme
A wonderful mama over here has a weekly cloth diapering meme. I love to talk about cloth diapers and this a perfect opportunity! I don't have any pictures because I have lost our camera (hopefully I find it soon), so a description will have to be enough for today.
This week is all about storing your diapers. I am always looking for new ways of organizing, so join in and maybe we can all learn a little something from each other.
Because of being in the moving process, our storing system is a little crazy, so the following is what it was until the packing took over and what it will be when I move. At the new place the changing table will actually be in the kids bathroom and I am really excited about that.
On the top of the changing table I have a small cloth lined basket for our cloth wipes. Right now Daniel and the basket still fit on there, but a couple more inches and it will have to go to the second shelf. I currently only use water on our wipes. Daniel's bum seems to be really sensitive. If anyone out there has a really gentle recipe for wipe solution, feel free to lay it on me.
Second shelf: My current stash is all bumGenius 3.0's One Size Pockets and we have one Happy Heiny (I have a bumwear one size coming in the mail). So after washing and drying, I stuff all the nappies so they are ready to go. I have two large cloth lined baskets and I fold the diaper in half and put them in the basket. Another small basket holds extra wipes, doublers and liners (which I don't use very often).
The bottom shelf will hold our baby towels and wash rags.
That's it. I can't wait to get moved and get everything organized again!

Of Friends, Camp and Diapers
It's a mixed bag to day friends.
Our holiday weekend was great!!! We had some of our peeps come and visit us. Fiona, Jonathan and Daniel came over on Saturday and left (practically had to be kicked out) Monday evening. They could have stayed longer, but you know that pesky thing called work beckoned them home. We had good food, good fellowship and relaxation!! What a grand way to spend the weekend.
Makiah left for church camp Monday morning. She is two and a half hours away from me. A couple of times yesterday I wondered if we had completely lost our minds!! Last night I got a call from our Pastor who is down there with Makiah and 20 other members of the church. When I answered I wasn't sure if it was a check in call or Makiah was going to be crying on the other end for me to come and pick her up. Makiah got on the phone and told me that she had received the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:38 for those who want an explanation) in church last night!!! I was thrilled!! How great is that??!?

Whittle
Today has been a day of exercise, cleaning, laundry, dishes and now heading out the door to Connect Group (church function).
A productive, good Saturday, ending it out with some food, fun and fellowship. Next week I'll be here with some fabulous new pictures from our fabulous new camera. You probably won't recognize us!!
On a side note, the first new batch of new cloth diapers arrived today. I am so excited. I should be getting the big lot on Monday. Just in time for our trip to St. Louis!!
Heart Tip: Whittling away your middle!! Measure your waist, if it's bigger around than 35 inches for women and 40 for men, then you are at an increased risk for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Time to get serious about making a dent in that extra flab--get active and get rid of simple sugars and white floured foods. These are the foods that like to cling to your middle. Even reducing those foods is better than nothing. Being more active seems to be a running theme in the prevention of heart disease. You can be thin and be unhealthy. Everyone should be active, eating whole grains and limiting simple sugars and white floured food. We in the Lovelock house are doing our best to limit these things (especially the mama), it's hard, but it can be done. By no means have we accomplished it yet.

I Am So Excited!!
Was going to take a bloggy break over the weekend, but I just had to share this incredible information. I went to a ladies meeting last night at my mom's church. After the devotion someone saw Daniel's cloth diaper and a conversation ensued. People are always amazed by the fact that we are cloth diapering.
So a lady there said you know they sell those at Wal-Mart.com.

Potty Talk- An Update on Cloth and Potty Training
Cloth--great!!
Potty training--dreadful! Need I say more about that???
Okay, okay, more info on both.
I am totally lovin' cloth diapers, nappies, as they are frequently referred to around here. Daniel has totally grown out of his infant prefolds and I have had fun selling and swapping on Diaper Swappers, getting rid of the old and getting some new stuff. Up to this point, I had only tried pocket diapers and I really love them, but two days ago my first AIO (all in one) nappy came and we are really liking that too. We have tried Blueberry's, Happy Heiny's and Fuzzi Bunz, and love them. I think I like Happy Heiny's the best, I think. I want to try Thirsties AIO, but the weight size for medium is a little bigger than Daniel is right now, and I don't want to order one until we can use it. I did order some prefolds and covers, the next size up and they! are! huge!! So I am going to sell or trade them for some more pockets or AIO's. I thought I use the prefolds while the others were being washed, but not so. Prefolds were great for infancy, but I like the convience of the pockets and AIO's. Okay so now that I have bored all of you with my love of nappies, on to the potty training.
Not going so well, actually it's not going at all.
I thought we were making progress and then he stopped going. I would faithfully take him every 15 minutes and set him on the throne but nothing would happen. I knew he had to go, but he didn't. So I gave him more to drink and he still didn't go. At nap time, I put a pull-up on him. Mama didn't raise no fool, sleeping time means pull-up time. The very second it hit his bum he peed in it and soaked it while sleeping. I put underoos back on him after his nap and started the drinking process again and the track meet to the potty began again and still no action in the potty. Finally right after dinner I put him in a pull-up and he did the same thing he did at nap time--immediately soaked it.
The next morning, before we began our marathon potty adventure, I noticed that his diaper smelled rancid and thought to myself "good he pooed before the underoos went on, YES!". But upon removing the pull-up we realized that he had not pooed, but in fact his urine was the rancid smell wafting through my home. Yes, dear readers, he held it for so long the day before that he actually gave himself a bladder infection. I felt like dirt. He still won't go on the potty. I must devise a new plan of attack, because the pull-up costs are killing the budget.
I believe that Samuel sums it up best. Yesterday at church, one of our young people asked him if he was going potty in the potty and Samuel proudly proclaimed "only at church".
He tells the truth folks, the only place he pees in the potty is at church, for only his Sunday school teacher.
I wonder if she could come live here for a few weeks.
I know how anxious you all were about being updated on our potty business around here. I wouldn't want you all to be deprived.

Give Me A Clothespin and Call Me Dorothy
I did it!! I went to Rural King (a very interesting store) and purchased me a clothes line and clothespins. I came home and hung it up and yesterday I used it for the first time!!
I was so excited--it obviously takes little to amuse me.
Now, let me tell you about Dorothy. She was my great-grandma and she was amazing. I remember going to visit her and thinking how amazing she was. She was an excellent cook and seamstress. She could crochet and paint a beautiful picture. She canned veggies and made jam and apple butter. She lived during the Great Depression and her and grandpa were dairy farmers (they also grew corn, lots-o-corn). She delivered the milk every day and ran her house with perfect precision. Her apple butter was better than I have ever tasted, to this day none can compare. I am saying all this to get to the clothesline. Grandma believed that nothing smelled better than clothes dried on the line. Even after dryers came about and she had a perfectly good dryer, for as long as the weather would allow, she hung EVERYTHING on the line. When we would go visit, her sheets and towels would have this distinctive smell that I have never smelled anywhere else. It was wonderful, it was grandma's house.
When Grandma passed away, my mom inherited her bedroom suite, which I slept on for my remaining few years at home. Along with that bed, came the sheets. The wonderful smelling sheets that smelled like nothing else I knew. They still smelled like "grandma's house".
Since then (about 13 years) those sheets have been washed and dried (in dryer) lots of times and guess what. . . . . those sheets still smell like "grandma's house". It's amazing. I slept on them back in the fall and they still transported me back to that house in Clay City, where apple butter and Apricot Angel Food cake were normal items in a meal and I went to sleep with fond memories floating through my head.
As I was hanging those cloth diapers on the line yesterday I thought of grandma. I thought of the hard times she lived through that I can only slightly imagine, the countless diapers (that she probably sewed herself) she hung a line, she had five children, and how she accomplished so much in a day that it makes my head swim.
So I posted today to tell everyone that I have a clothes line for hanging diapers to dry. I know you all were anxiously waiting for this information.

Someone Help Me, I Think I'm Obsessed
I have become obsessed with cloth diapers!! I will be one of those people who buy way more than they need because I think I "just have to have that"! I don't have too many yet, but I can see myself heading there. I need someone to hold me accountable.
That or take away my debiting privileges!
I bought two bumWear online last week and when I put them on Daniel he looked bottom heavy to the max. He looked like a cute little pear and I didn't like their fit so I decided last night that I would put them on Diaperswappers and see if I could sell or trade them. I posted them and then I went browsing around.
I got a reply back in less than ten minutes telling me she wanted them. I said yes and the transaction was complete.
Oh, I have discovered the joy of paypal. Where have I been for, oh, the last five years?!?!?
I then decided I couldn't just let that money sit there, so I went shopping. I got two Blueberry's for less than the price of one! Oh the joy!! Oh the excitement!!
The search continues for more Happy Heiny's, Daniel and I really like those.
I haven't received the Fuzzi Bunz I ordered yet, but I can't wait to try those. The Thirsties AIO's mediums are a little big for him, so I think I'll wait on those.
Hubs thinks I have completely lost it, but he indulges me. What a man!!
My most recent idea is to string a clothesline across the privacy fence "walls" at the sides of our patio, so that I can line dry the cloth diapers. The complex is having a complex over this idea, but I think I'm going to anyway. If it will save a little on our energy bill, it's worth it. It will be warm for a couple more months at least.
I am also on a quest to find a way to make Apple Butter like my great-grandma Dorothy used to. It was so yummy, but she cooked it outside. What do you think the complex would think about that?? She also made the best Apricot Angelfood Cake with Apricot icing. I need to learn that too.
Also thinking of making my own baby food. I used to make some foods for my daughter when she was a baby and I am thinking of doing it again. It was a great way to save $$$, especially once she was eating meat, I would just food process whatever we were eating until is was mush and she loved it! It also helped her to like what we were eating so there was no problem in transitioning to table food.
Next I'll want to churn my own butter!! Just kidding.
Well, now that I have rambled all way from cloth diapers to cake, apple butter to baby food, I think I'll call an end to this. I have a feeling I could just keep on ramblin'.
I promise the next post will be more blog worthy, well at least more interesting than my rambling thoughts!! Maybe I'll tell you about that pirate ship Hubs is building, complete with pics!!

I Never Thought I'd Get Excited Over Something Like This
I just ordered two Happy Heiny's from here, and I am so excited. Not only are we trying a new diaper, but we got them on clearance, that's always a plus. I am excited to be trying a new kind of diaper for lil' man since he is just about out of his prefolds. I really want to try Fuzzi Bunz, but I am not quite ready to pay twenty bucks each, I am hoping to catch them over here for a lesser price. I will wait it out. I definitely didn't see myself getting excited about getting new cloth diapers, a new purse, yes, cloth diapers no. I never thought I would be using cloth diapers and loving them, but we are and I am.
Linton is still not quite sure about them and when I'm not here and I come back Daniel will be in a disposable. :) He'll get there I'm sure. This is the same man that asked me while pregnant with baby number one, "Are you going to use cloth diapers?" (notice the use of you in that question) and I, almost in disgust, replied, "no, have you lost your mind." I never considered cloth diapering before, some think my mind is slipping and others think I am being environmentally conscience--they're both wrong, I am just trying to save money. But it's a side benefit that I am helping the environment too. Wow, I really took a rabbit trail there, back to the original thought. . . . .
Now here we are. I have fully embraced cloth and he is clinging to Huggies with all his might. What can I say, we have come a long way.
Well, I am wide awake and everyone around me is sleeping. I seem to have my days and nights mixed up and I am rambling, could someone please help me?!?!
Goodnight bloggity friends. I promise tomorrow I'll have something more interesting to post and hopefully it has a point that's easily followed.

Lovin' It
I am loving the whole cloth diapering thing. I am loving it so much that I wanted to try cloth wipes as well, so I had a spare piece of fleece laying around (rather big too) and so last night a chopped it up to make cloth wipes. I cut a small area a couple of days ago so that I could try it out before cutting all of it up and wasting all that fleece. I loved them and so does Daniel so I cut up the rest of it and ended up with about 30 cloth wipes. . . . pardon me a moment, someone is wailing. . . .
okay, clean diaper, nursing, happy baby--one handed typing for mama. . where was I??
Oh, yes, 30 cloth diapers. We are loving it. The fleece is so soft and when used with warm water, well, hey who wouldn't want that?? I do tons of laundry anyway, so what's an extra load or three a week?!?! I lose count anyway. I am loving the fact that I am saving money with every change and I am getting better everyday with the changes (at first I am sure Daniel wondered what in the world I was doing). So that is where we stand with cloth diapers.
Update on Daniel's weight. . . he is now up to 9 pounds and 1 ounce. Growing, growing, growing. As much as he eats I am not surprised. He slept 6 and a half hours last night and I am loving that, too.
