The Potty Chronicles, Daniel Edition No. 1

Yes, it's THAT again. Baby boy child is on the cusp of potty training, technically one foot has stepped in. Full force potty training will begin in a couple of weeks. We are just getting out feet wet, so to speak. I feel very hopeful about this round! I think he will potty train pretty easily (that doesn't mean easy it just means easier than older brother Sam) and without too many melt downs. Hopefully Daniel won't meltdown either. ~Smile~

So the other day I decide to buy Daniel some pull-ups and just how he would do. Up to this point in his life going to the potty hasn't really been on his mind. He would sit down for 1.3 seconds and then announce that he was done even though there was nothing in the potty. But I wasn't stressing about it, trying to hold off a little longer before I step into a nervous breakdown on purpose. Makiah and Sam are both taking a personal interest in this as well. I mean I don't understand why potty training is so fun but Makiah is all about helping Daniel. Does it make me a bad mom if I let her? I don't think so, but if you disagree feel free to not tell me. Ignorance is bliss. ~Wink~

So the other day I hear Makiah in the bathroom with Daniel, pull-ups just purchased and mother hen, uh older sister Makiah was taking a firm hand. She is telling him in a very grown up way to tell her when he needs to go potty or when he feels that funny feeling. Daniel says, "okay Bakiah". Then she tells him that he can tell Mama too. Well thank you Makiah for keeping me in the loop. At this point I am cracking up. I was just outside the bathroom in the office listening. So far everyday for the last three days he has went pee pee in the potty at least once. Sometimes more. He thinks he is very big with his "pool ups" (that would be how he pronounces it) and really likes going to sit on the potty every 10 minutes. Next week we will go invest in cloth training pants and some Mickey Mouse and Elmo underwear, those were his special request underwear. Sam is also actively participating in this process because every time he goes to the bathroom he drags Daniel along. This is typically how it he says it, "come on Daniel, its time to go to the bathroom and I don't won't to hear any arguments" (as he is pulling him by the arm or hand). Ha ha ha, Sam has heard that phrase a time or two thousand in his little lifetime!!! So now that I have many or mini helpers in the potty training process, I do believe it may not cause the death of me. Hopefully.

Aren't you glad that I'm blogging again?? I know you all would not want to miss this!

The Potty Chronicles, Installment 12

I realized today that I haven't posted about potty training in a while. No better day than today!

Sam is doing AMAZING with the potty training. He has really turned a corner. We can actually go to church on Sunday, in underwear and go all day with no accidents. I am so proud of him. I was beginning to think he was going to turn four in Pull-Ups and I really didn't want that. Not to mention the $$$ that Pull-Ups cost! So everyone is benefiting from Sam's new found potty skills! He does all his business in the potty, including the pooing type business. I expected that to take longer, but he proudly proclaims to anyone within ear shot that he is a big boy because he pooped in the potty!!

He still goes to bed in a Pull-up because getting up to change his bed every night really doesn't appeal to me. Sometimes he is dry in the morning and sometimes he isn't. I have considered getting him some cloth training pants. I mean it's not like I am not already washing cloth diapers and the trainers can be used with Daniel too.

I am so glad that I can say, I think the potty drama is over. I am sure we will have accidents. Accidents at home, church and other not-so-convenient places, but I can do accidents when I know we are progressing. I didn't think it would take this long, but every kid is different and they have to "get it" for themselves. By pushing it, I was only frustrating myself and him. Now going potty is still an exciting event, but it isn't stressful.

Let me say to those who are in the beginning stages of potty training or in the throes of frustration, IT DOES GET BETTER. I have a few tips that I would like to throw out there, not that I am a pro by any means!! Just a few things that might help you, some of these I learned the hard way!

1. Let your child pick out their underwear. They are more likely to wear it and not do business in it.

2. If your child is drinking plenty and not going to pee either in the potty or accidently on the floor in more than two hours, they are probably holding it. Take off the underwear, put on a Pull-Up. Stop potty training for a few days. A few days delay is better than a urinary tract infection. They are probably not ready.

3. Stop using Pull-Ups!! Sam knew he could go in the Pull-up and had the why bother putting his toys down to pee when he could right then type thinking. When I stopped using Pull-Ups during the day and just endured the accidents, it wasn't two days and we were accident free. Sure it required more of my time and patience, but it paid off!

4. Calm down and don't stress. . . or try anyway. I was always afraid of what people would think of me as a parent for not having my kid potty trained at his age. Then I thought, "who cares what you think". I am the one buying Pull-Ups and doing the training. People who wanted to criticize had no idea what we had been through with potty training and I tuned them out, unless they actually had something valid to offer. Bottom line (no pun intended, but it's funny) you know what you are doing about potty training and know one else. Your kid, your problem--ignore them and move on.

These days I only remind him occasionally, usually he goes completely on his own. I LOVE it!! I am going to enjoy this season for in a few months, that will fly by, I will start this process with Daniel.

'Fro-less

No need to break out the white suit, platform shoes or teach him to disco--the 'fro is gone.

Yes, all my son's curls are in the trash can. Even though I like is 'fro, it totally matches his personality, it was too long. It was almost 6 inches when we pulled a strand all the way out to see how long it was, 6 inches!! He was overdo for a cut.

Even though it changes his look so dramatically. He looks like a total big boy.

I like it just a little longer than it is now, but it'll grow in and we won't have to cut it again for several months.

I wish I had counted how many times Hubs said, "stand still son". It was many.

Here are some pictures for your enjoyment.

Before--isn't he cute!!

Mid-cut, Hubs a death grip on him!!

After!! It's a different kid!!

That's my big boy. A rascal, but mine!

Potty update: fantastic!! No accidents in two days!! We are becoming potty professionals around here. He is doing so well, I promised him a trip to the store at the end of the week to get a little present. Dollar Tree is my friend.

Daniel has pink eye in both eyes. Apparently one of the little girls at church on Sunday had it (no symptoms at the time) and she loved on him more than I like--had to peel her off of him more than once--and now my baby has it. He looks terrible but he just laughs and claps. He doesn't laugh at the drops though.

I think Makiah is going through a growth spurt. This girl is sleeping and sleeping. I know I should wake her, but she is so teary and weepy if you wake her before her time. So we will focus on school work when she wakes up.

Anyway, back to the clothing mountain and cleaning that is calling to me. Back tomorrow with "Homeschooling Fun".

The Potty Chronicles, Installment No. 11

I have good news to report on potty training. It's about time right???

Well, one day last week, I was changing a pull-up and on a whim asked Sam if he wanted to go potty. He said yes, went in there, sat down and peed. I was ecstatic! We clapped and danced and he beamed with pride.

The rest of that day, he went to the potty every time and only had one accident. I was impressed. I mean, from the last time we really, really tried to now, he's a different kid. I believe he finally has learned control. Off and on last week he wore underwear (we didn't everyday because of travel, the circus and various other events), but I just wanted him to continue with trying. He has only had one accident since last week!!!!! Only one!!!!! Did you hear me????? ONLY ONE!!!

After one time last week, I made this statement, "Sammy, I am so proud of you". And I was. I was very proud. He looked at me and asked, "you, proud me mama?". I answered yes and he just glowed. Now, every time he asks me, "you proud me mama?" and I gladly exclaim "YES".

So this morning, first thing, we took off the pull-up and he said, "ok, now I think I need to go potty and put on my underwear". You talk about a breakthrough, that's a BREAKTHROUGH!! He wanted underwear on, I almost wept tears of joy.

So I can proudly say, we are having success with the potty around here. I am glad about it.

At this writing, it is 9:12 in the morning. He is in underwear and working on writing his name! We're off to a good start.

It is now 11:04 and we are still going great. He did have one accident, but he was trying to get to the bathroom, so he gets an A for effort.

It is now 4:21 and we have been in real underwear all day (with the exception of nap time, I'm not that brave yet) and he's had only one accident. ~~Break~~mama is doing a happy dance~~~Okay resume story~~

When he woke up from nap time he came in the kitchen and told me it was time to put on underwear cause he needed to potty.

Does anyone besides me hear the Hallelujah chorus being sung in the background??? Cause I hear it people, I hear it!!

I am so happy and he is so proud of himself and I am proud too. I think he might just be out of diapers before starting Kindergarten!! There goes that Hallelujah chorus again!

My Ears Are Bleeding

Not literally, but close. Samuel screams. Loudly and high pitched. He can speak in complete sentences, actually when they evaluated him at the doctor he is speaking at a four year old level--yet he screams.

He screams when Makiah touches his blanket. Don't touch or move the beloved blanket.

He screams when you don't give him cheese or yogurt or anything else he thinks he needs from the refrigerator.

He screams when he gets told no. Which is quite often, I might add.

He screams when he can't watch a movie.

He screams when you touch his toys--even though 2.3 seconds ago you were playing together, now you aren't. Didn't you know?

My ears can't take much more. He has moved from telling you what's wrong to screaming and now added stomping his feet. As if screaming wasn't enough, as if we didn't hear him. It's quite a show. Unfortunately it makes me cringe and question my parenting abilities.

It also makes me not what to leave the house with him. Ever. I want him quarantined until the screaming disease is gone. Banished. For ever.

We have tried multiply discipline techniques to get him to stop screaming and nothing is working. Please, if you have any suggestions, send 'em my way. I am begging people. My ears are begging.

On a side note, Daniel is doing so many new things now. He is really improving in his abilities. He still has developmental delays, but he is progressing. He has an appointment with a Developmental Pediatrician in January. I just remembered I never wrote the post about him I was supposed to write. Well, it boils down to this. Daniel has tightness issues on one side of his body. At first we just thought is was developmental delays (DD), but his mama, who has been down the DD path before, felt like it was more. So I began doing research. I found some things that I didn't like. So I went to his pediatrician and she agreed that it was something more, but out of her diagnostic scope. There is a possibility that Daniel has a very mild case of Cerebral Palsy. If that is the case it is very mild because he is hitting other milestones, just not all of them. So we are just continuing with physical therapy for the tightness and delays until we know if there is more. He is progressing so that makes me happy. Right now he is on my lap, trying to help me type.

Potty update: Samuel actually peed in the potty yesterday, so we will see how it goes today.

Have a blessed and happy Wednesday.

Potty Vingette #3

So no he didn't ever go in the potty, but at least is attempting it again.

Tomorrow is another day.

Besides the potty training going on, Daniel is teething. That means my normally content and happy baby is rather cranky and clingy.

Needless to say, my to do list is still just that. . . . except now it's a STILL left to do list.

Hopefully we won't be popsicles in the morning, our furnace is not coming on.

Off to hot chocolate and a good book.

Potty Vingette #2

Tally sheet:

On the floor: ////

In the potty:

Yeah, so far not so good on the in the potty portion.

I will say this, there was one time that he was trying to get to the potty and he told me and we missed it by maybe three seconds. At least he's trying.

I'll be back this evening with a final report.

Potty Vingette #1

So it's Monday. . . the day of the To Do List Doom.

It is also our first day back in full swing potty training.

So, I'm going to try to post throughout the day about how our potty adventure is going. I know you all are excited about this.

So far this morning, he has been in underwear and he hasn't had any accidents, but he hasn't peed either. So hopefully he isn't holding it, which is what happened the last time.

I have tons of stuff to get caught up on today because of being down for five days with my back out. My back is better, not great, but better. You know I walk now instead of shuffle, so that's good.

I'm off to fold laundry. Be back later.

Potty Talk- An Update on Cloth and Potty Training

Cloth--great!!

Potty training--dreadful! Need I say more about that???

Okay, okay, more info on both.

I am totally lovin' cloth diapers, nappies, as they are frequently referred to around here. Daniel has totally grown out of his infant prefolds and I have had fun selling and swapping on Diaper Swappers, getting rid of the old and getting some new stuff. Up to this point, I had only tried pocket diapers and I really love them, but two days ago my first AIO (all in one) nappy came and we are really liking that too. We have tried Blueberry's, Happy Heiny's and Fuzzi Bunz, and love them. I think I like Happy Heiny's the best, I think. I want to try Thirsties AIO, but the weight size for medium is a little bigger than Daniel is right now, and I don't want to order one until we can use it. I did order some prefolds and covers, the next size up and they! are! huge!! So I am going to sell or trade them for some more pockets or AIO's. I thought I use the prefolds while the others were being washed, but not so. Prefolds were great for infancy, but I like the convience of the pockets and AIO's. Click on the link above if you are interested cloth, it's one retailer I have used. Ya know, all three of you that read this, that might want to know about some Fuzzi Bunz or Happy Heinys.

Okay so now that I have bored all of you with my love of nappies, on to the potty training.

Not going so well, actually it's not going at all.

I thought we were making progress and then he stopped going. I would faithfully take him every 15 minutes and set him on the throne but nothing would happen. I knew he had to go, but he didn't. So I gave him more to drink and he still didn't go. At nap time, I put a pull-up on him. Mama didn't raise no fool, sleeping time means pull-up time. The very second it hit his bum he peed in it and soaked it while sleeping. I put underoos back on him after his nap and started the drinking process again and the track meet to the potty began again and still no action in the potty. Finally right after dinner I put him in a pull-up and he did the same thing he did at nap time--immediately soaked it.

The next morning, before we began our marathon potty adventure, I noticed that his diaper smelled rancid and thought to myself "good he pooed before the underoos went on, YES!". But upon removing the pull-up we realized that he had not pooed, but in fact his urine was the rancid smell wafting through my home. Yes, dear readers, he held it for so long the day before that he actually gave himself a bladder infection. I felt like dirt. He still won't go on the potty. I must devise a new plan of attack, because the pull-up costs are killing the budget.

I believe that Samuel sums it up best. Yesterday at church, one of our young people asked him if he was going potty in the potty and Samuel proudly proclaimed "only at church".

He tells the truth folks, the only place he pees in the potty is at church, for only his Sunday school teacher.

I wonder if she could come live here for a few weeks.

I know how anxious you all were about being updated on our potty business around here. I wouldn't want you all to be deprived.

The Potty Chronicles, Installment No. 10

HE ACTUALLY PEED IN THE POTTY, FOR ME, THREE TIMES ON MONDAY!! Go, Sam, Go.

And he hasn't done it again. Though my bathroom floor is getting mopped quite frequently. We seem to make into the bathroom about 4 seconds to late and by the time we are pulling the pants down, he pees, on the floor.

We are making some improvement though, I know it doesn't sound like it, but we are. He knows now when he needs to go, he just usually knows a little to late to make it to the potty. But at least he knows and will say, "Ha, I neegopotty", and look at me weird. So small steps of improvement, but improvement. He gets two Skittles every time he goes in the potty and a sticker on the sticker chart.

I went out today and bought some more underwear, because we seem to be using quite a few.

Well, that is where I have been for the last two days, running to the bathroom every 15 minutes.

Nothing else really going on around here. Just doing some reading for the summer reading program and some school work with my overachiever. Other than that it has been a blissful three days at home. I love staying in.

It's All About Sam and The Potty Chronicles No. 9

Well, well, well my two year old never ceases to amaze and again this morning we were amazed.

He woke up early and cried out mommy and then went back to sleep, or so I thought. That was my first mistake, this morning that is.

I was nursing Daniel and fully expected my beloved toddler to besiege my bed but he didn't so I fell back asleep.

About a hour later I wake up to "hi mommy" in a very loud, toddler type voice. I opened my eyes with lovingness in my heart and then I saw him.

He had made is way downstairs, the gate didn't stop him. He even leaned it neatly and quietly against the wall. In is chubby little hands was the open can of chocolate fudge frosting and a spoon--he had made himself breakfast!!! He was feasting on the frosting and had a cute little chocolate mustache to complete his look.

As if that wasn't enough, he proceeds to tell me that he cleaned the poopy. I immediately had visions of a poopy diaper laying on the living room floor. I looked and saw he still had his diaper on, but strangely enough it was wet and so was the back of his shirt.

We aren't exactly sure what he did and we may never know. ~~insert Twilight zone music here~~

The downstairs was all intact so the frosting and the diaper were his only adventures, for which I am very thankful.

Now onto the latest in the potty talk around the Lovelocks. I told you it was all about Sam.

When at church the other night I was about to change his diaper and he said "wait, I gotta pee some mo", I stopped and he made a strange face and then said "ok, I done". Little turkey. He did that again while I was changing him this morning and I thought he was going to pee on me. So he has sealed his fate.

So having seen that, I have decided that he is more than ready and he doesn't have a choice but to go potty. Tomorrow we go underoos and rubber pants. Daniel goes back to cloth diapers tomorrow (just found the box) and we go back to saving money.

Good Friends are a Cherished Gift

I am so thankful to have been blessed with such good friends. We had a great time this weekend and already miss them.

Makiah sang at church yesterday and did a fabulous job. I'm not biased or proud at all, can't you tell???

He looks guilty doesn't he? He probably is!! I love my Sam.

Potty training has been put on hold until later this week due to church camp and we will be gone for a couple of days. I am still reading my "Mom's Rescue Guide" and I am getting my plan of attack laid out. Sounds very serious doesn't it, well it is. I am trying to find ways to save $$ and him not needing pull-ups or diapers anymore would certainly help! More on $$ conservation at a later time.

Well, now I must go pack for our journey into church camp and I am not afraid to admit that I am more than a little frightened. We haven't been to church camp with little ones. . . ever. So I must pack enough for an African safari and I HAVEN'T EVEN BEGUN!!! Must forge ahead. . . goodnight all.

Remember to thank God tonight for good friends. They are truly gifts from above.

The Potty Chronicles, Installment No. 6

I bought a book.

No pee or poo in the pot.

Still wearing easy-ups.

Oh, for a magic "go pee and poo in the pot everytime like a big boy" wand.

Any suggestions??

Pray, please pray. My hair is turning gray as we speak.

And the Oscar goes to. . .

My seven year old, Makiah!! That girl is so much drama. I love her dearly, but if she is this emotional now, what is she going to be like in seven more years!! Ack, it's to scary to think about. Yes, I clearly realize that she got this dramatic side from me but still, I may loose my mind before she makes teenhood. I love my mother more everyday, knowing that this is what she had to deal with. I think I'll nominate her for sainthood.

The potty chronicles continue. . . he is getting a little better. Has he actually gone in the potty, no, but he is at least he is more conscience of what is happening and when. Today he actually told me he had to go potty. We ran in the bathroom, and proceeded to wait. . . . and wait. . . . and wait. We sang, counted, talked about colors and shapes and he still hadn't gone. So thinking that I was going to spend all day sitting the side of the bath tub we stood up and about 2 minutes later, he peed in the rubber pants and Mickey underoo's. Now you know that if I had waited five more minutes he still wouldn't have went in the potty, but because we stood up, he went. I am now wondering if he is afraid to actually pee in the potty and that's why he waited. I don't know, I am just wading through potty training with him. Hopefully we will get it figured out soon.

As for me, I am a tired mama tonight. All the sweetie's are sleeping, so I think I'll take this opportunity to sleep too.

yawn. . . . . zzzzzzzz :O

Good night.

The Latest in the Potty Chronicles

Well, I finally found rubber pants and I was so excited. I just knew that he would hate feeling wet like that and within 2 hours he would be going to the potty, or at least trying. So we excitedly (had to make it a big deal for him) put on Elmo underwear and a pair of rubber pants with hundreds of reminders to go on the potty and "not pee on Elmo". About an hour later and 4 sit downs on the potty, he peed in the rubbers. So we changed them and put on another round. Still feeling positive we sat on the potty every 15 minutes and after the 5th or 6th time, 2 minutes after standing up, he peed in the rubbers. Being the patient mama I am (ha ha), I put another round on him and tried it again. Having just peed I told him to tell me and we try to go again in a few minutes, well he beat me to the punch and peed not 45 seconds after leaving the bathroom. Having reached my limit of undies and rubbers for the day and Daniel screaming from the other room (thinking he's starving), I put pull-ups on him and went to feed the baby.

So I feel like a potty training failure. I don't know if he's just not ready or if we just aren't using the right approach. That manual referenced a few posts back is looking more and more like a need not a want.

So that is my latest installment in the potty training chronicles. I am really sick (ear infection, not of the potty) right now, so yesterday we abandoned the idea so that I could re-think our training ways.

Just for the Girls

Mothers, daughters, flowers, games and food. . .  A Mother/Daughter Banquet.  Makiah and I (and Daniel, of course) attended my mom's church's banquet.  It was fun and really nice to spend the afternoon with my mom.  We celebrated Mother's Day today, so that we wouldn't have to squeeze in time tomorrow between church services.  After the luncheon we went to mom's house and played games with Makiah and just chatted up the afternoon.  Sam and Daddy were having bonding time, and with the new Wii, Makiah and I weren't even missed.

Update on potty training. . . we're not.  We have put that off until I can locate rubber pants, I don't like having pee on my floor.  So we are still trying, but as long as he has a Pull-up on he is going to go in it.  So I guess technichally we haven't stopped potty training, but we are not going at it whole-heartedly right now.

So I  really need to go and get the two year old settled in, but being with daddy today his nap was slightly late....5 p.m., so he is WIDE awake.  Onward  into battle. . . .

Thursday, May 8, 2008

Okay so today the trenches are filled with pee!

Yes, I said pee.  We are in the throws of potty training Sam, our two year old son.  It's not pretty people, not at all.  So I am now on the hunt for rubber pants, because I just can't bring myself to buy other package of regular diapers, Pull-ups maybe, but not regular diapers.  Anyway, he peed on the floor three times (yes, I know--I put him in big boy undies and expected him not to pee, I must be crazy) and it was back to a pull-up for him.  It's been awhile since I had to potty train someone-and I have been going on my own for awhile now-and that was a girl.  From what I have been told, girls are easier (I'm starting to agree), so maybe I need a manual.  Not that I haven't read all kinds of ideas online.   Every kid should come with their own set of instructions, you know, the vest way to teach that child to pee in the potty.  I am sure someone out there has tons of advice to give about how to potty train a boy, a strong-willed, very busy boy.

By-the-way, I am Valerie-new to the bloggy world and brimming with stories to share from the parenting trenches.  I love being a full time mom and wife and hopefully I will bring a little laughter to someone else and hopefully keep my sanity another day.  :)

Well I must get back to the tasks at hand.  I have been discovered.
