Jump Aboard Scallywags!!

Well, Open Grill was a great success with an amazing ship as the centerpiece decoration. It was huge. It ended up being 18 feet long, at it's lowest point it was 6 feet tall and at it's tallest point it was 14 feet tall. It even had an Urban Angel on the bow (no mermaids here). Unfortunately it was already getting dark when I took pics, but you can still see most of it.

Here's the creation from my very talented Husband.


Here is our angel. He is an Urban Angel. Linton has been drawing/painting "Urban Angels" for years and just about nothing is complete without one. The Angel was 4 and a half feet tall.

Every good pirate has to have a banister to stand behind.


This is the back of the ship. Both sides had the little fish.


The back of the ship was the most awesome to me (I'm just slightly biased). He actually drew the profile of the Lions Heads and then cut them out. In the center is a round window.

We had several people come that had never been to our church before. We had great food and fellowship.

Argh!! Ahoy There!?

As I have previously stated, my husband is building a pirate ship, yes, a huge pirate ship. . . . out of cardboard. Now before you think he's lost his mind, or just needs something to do, there is a reason for it.

We are having Open Grill at our church. Open Grill is a new program developed by Hubs to try and get new people to the church. Open Grill is a dinner for all of our visitors that have visited over the last couple of months. Sort of a thank you for visiting and we would like for you to join us again.

It is a good way for visitors to see the church outside of an actual service and they get to see the saints all working together.

So the theme for this first Open Grill is. . . . . . (drum roll please). . . . .Caribbean Nights! The dinner begins at 7:30 p.m. complete with tiki torches and pineapple!

So you are still wondering why a ship right? Well how can you have a Caribbean dinner and not have a 21 foot pirate ship, that's right I said 21 foot. It is not a typo, it's really 21 feet long. This thing is huge!! It's cardboard, cardboard everywhere!! Please don't call the environment police on us!!

These are the "ribs" of the ship. It is big enough to put a chair in and sit awhile!

This is one section of the ship. We have to cut it up and reassemble it outside. It's too wide to fit through the door.

No pirate ship is complete without a fancy banister to stand behind.My Hubs doesn't do anything small or half-way. This is the kind of thing you deal with when you marry an artist. Don't get me started on the "city" he built for a previous dinner.

Let me tell you about the menu so you all can wish you were here. We are having a Caribbean burger (created by Hubs, oh yeah he cooks too). It's a thick burger, with cheddar cheese, a ginger-garlic sauce (created also by Hubs), thick sliced bacon and topped with a slice of fresh pineapple. Add a side of fried plantains and some Mango Lemonade and you have a Caribbean meal. We are having bananas rolled in coconut or banana creme pie for dessert.

I'll tell you about the rest of the decorations in another post. My two year old is in serious need of attention and a nap.
